Some cases can be unpredictable. When I received these
dials from a calendar clock I found that they had been coated with a
varnish that had yellowed over many years. This was not apparent from
preliminary photos sent for my review. The usual methods of cleaning
could not be utilized and neither could the yellowed varnish be removed.
It was difficult to match my new paint to the existing color, altered
by the added varnish. The uneven application of the aged varnish is
visible in the photos taken before restoration. as overflow seen at the
edges. Also the difference in color between the original paint and the
presently yellowed varnish can be seen at the very edge of the time dial
restoration, where some of the varnish was removed in a test. Despite
these unusual issues, the dial restorations were successful.
